Chapter XIX - The Offer
"This is all a little vague around the edges for me." Gunn said.
"I agree, Lilah. You expect us to believe that Wolfram and Hart is going to just pull up shop and give us LA?" Angel frowned at the not quite dead lawyer before him. "Not buying it."
"We are neither pulling up shop nor giving you LA. We are just offering to give you control of the Los Angeles offices of Wolfram and Hart." Lilah reclined on one of the couches that dotted the lobby and smiled at the group. Her gaze rested on Spike, but the others seemed not to notice.
"Why now. What makes them so willing to give up, Lilah." Wesley asked, near to choking on her name.
"It’s just our way of saying kudos. Job well done, etcetera etcetera."
"Kudos for what?" Angel asked.
"For stopping the big bad, of course. If there’s one thing the senior partners hate, it’s other people charging in like the four horsemen into our apocalypse. Not to mention the fact that you’re all about to end world peace."
"We’re what?" Asked Fred from her vantage point behind the lobby counter. "I realize you’ve been gone for a few days but we haven’t got plans to end world peace."
"Oh, I know, doll." Lilah avoided eye contact with Fred and replied looking at Angel. "No one ever really plans these things. But trust me, before the night is over Wolfram and Hart will owe you all one big debt of gratitude. We just decided to jump the gun a bit in case someone makes you a better offer first."
"Let me guess? Seers saw something sinister?" Angel asked.
"Ding ding ding ding. And extra points for alliteration." Lilah stood up and walked up the steps to the landing and turned back to the group. "Tell you what, I’ll send a limo by an hour or so before dawn tomorrow and if any of you want to hear more you can get it straight from the horse’s mouth. Take a tour, see for yourself."
"Oh sure Lilah, we’ll just walk right into that little trap." Gunn said with a shake of his head.
"No trap. I’ll see you in the morning. I’m sure." She turned back to the door and left the Angel Investigations team to ponder the possibilities.

"Am I the only one a little wigged out right now?" Gunn asked.
"Safe to say no." Wesley answered.
"Oh, Wesley. That must have been just horrible for you." Fred said, chiding herself for not having more sympathy in her voice.
"It was a bit awkward. When you decapitate a loved one you don’t expect to see them again. At least not for a while."
"A loved one?" Fred asked.
"Just an expression." Wesley tried to cast off the remark, but did not sound nearly as flippant as he had hoped.
Angel paced through the lobby for a moment rolling Lilah’s offer through his mind looking for the catch. He came to a sudden stop in front of the weapons cabinet and grabbed out a broad sword.
"We going hunting, lover?" Spike asked.
"Something like that. Lorne get on the horn with your contacts and see if any of them know about a big mystical icky going on tonight. If Lilah’s seers have seen something chances are somebody else has too."
"Angel, are we thinking that the Beast’s boss is behind whatever Lilah was talking about?" Wesley asked from behind the vampire.
"I think it’s safe to say that it’s not over." Angel answered. He then turned and handed Wesley a crossbow.
"Maybe we let Faith go too early." Gunn said taking a battle ax out of the cabinet and twirling it in his hands.
"No, we can handle this. Fred would you go upstairs and get Connor and Cordelia? We better get everyone working. I think this is going to be a long night." Angel nodded to Spike and he too picked a sword from the wall and followed Angel out the doors of the Hyperion.
"Good thing we got a good night’s sleep."
"Oh yeah, I feel rested."
